Joe Kanner was ten years old when he and his family emigrated from Galicia, Poland to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. This major coal mining area was in the midst of a severe recession at this time and the town was closing down rapidly. Being an enterprising young man, Joe headed west and settled in the Boyle-Heights area of East Los Angeles.
For twelve years he drove a truck for a beer distribution company. He then engaged in the wine business for four years, followed by the opening of the Glendale Produce Company in downtown Los Angeles.

With a decade of making many friends and loyal customers, Joe developed an interest in the seafood industry. He foresaw a need for a good seafood distributor.
In 1960, he left the produce company and formed City Sea Foods. Working from a half-ton truck ,which was loaded with ice, fresh and frozen seafood, he set out to sell his selective products from restaurant to restaurant with a personable style of direct client contact. To this day City Sea Foods has retained many of his customers with which he began his business.

Joe opened his own warehouse at 531 Towne Avenue in 1968 where it stands today. Don, Joe’s son, was virtually born and raised in the food service business. Spending his vacations, after school and weekends working with his father, Don soon learned what hard work was all about. In 1968, Don became completely involved with the seafood business, and has been the guiding force in many forms of expansion and creative improvements.
Along with servicing restaurants, hotels and resorts, City Sea Foods now services most of the major pleasure cruise lines entering the Los Angeles Harbor. With this extensive experience, Don has expanded his business to include the Miami and Phoenix areas.
